ParticipantThe MG5 manual is quite specific, the impulse timing is set at TDC.
Also I am using original specification spark plugs, properly gapped at 0.035″.
I have obtained a replacement coil and I will fit it tomorrow.February 10, 2019 at 11:32 pm #30327

So, where does that leave the timing once the impulse has tripped?

ParticipantThe spring loaded impulse unit only engages at low revs holding the firing point at TDC, as soon as the engine starts and runs at 600rpm centrifugal force holds back the impulse latch so that it does not engage running the timing at 20deg, btdc.

wristpinParticipantThat makes more sense, so I suppose that the next step is to check that the impulse is actually tripping at TDC at cranking speed.

ParticipantUpdate.
Well, I have replaced the Magnito coil. (Thanks to Neil Jarret) After a bit of mucking about I got it to start on Saturday.
Once running, it performed perfectly. No misfires. A nice steady beat. Tick over was slow enough for the clutch to disengage. Acceleration was smooth with no flat spots.
I took it for a short run round the yard before parking it up.
Today I started it again. Still a bit fiddly, but a lot better than before.
I am tracking down a Two Stroke post hole drill and I am going to see if it can be adapted to use as a starter.
I will keep you all informed.February 12, 2019 at 8:19 am #30351silverfoxfintry
ParticipantJust had a thought, Ransome 256. Posted his starting procedure. Neil, you don’t mention opening the choke after flooding. Do you start the Engine using full choke? Or 1/2 choke?
February 12, 2019 at 8:50 am #30353
ransomes256ParticipantFull choke, drop to half choke once started and easing off as engine warms.

ParticipantI have always tried to start on 1/2 choke. As per the manual. I will try your method.

ParticipantI go full choke until it fires, if it does not start I go to half choke on second pull.
My two stroke drill is a Stihl ex british rail.February 12, 2019 at 3:06 pm #30360andyfrost
ParticipantTop job , it sounds as if your concerns are over.

ParticipantAfter a bit of research I decided to purchase a Hyundai post hole borer.
Adapted it to fit a starting dog and tried it out yesterday.
Success! Got to have a very firm grip on the borer until the Ransomes engine kickers over, but it started first try.
I now feel confident that I can use it to extract logs from my Wood.
Thanks for all the help and advice.Iain
