Hi all, new here but I’m hoping to get some advice if possible. I have just purchased a westwood w6 to restore back to its formal glory. It has a 6hp engine but the con rod has snapped hence why it was parked up 5 years ago. I just want to know if it is a briggs and stratton engine? I’ve seen it could be a couple of different makes but want to make sure what it is before trying to source parts. Any help is really appreciated!

I have the brochure, it says the W6 has a 222cc, 6hp, Tecumseh 4 stroke engine. The W6 was recoil start and the W6E was electric start.

The W8 model had a 314cc, 8hp, Briggs and Stratton 4 stroke engine with electric start.

However, this isn’t to say that the W6 was never available with a Briggs engine at some point. I’d be tempted to install a Briggs engine in any case if the current engine proves beyond repair.

A clearer image with the bonnet open will help identify your engine, but if you are intending to replace rather than repair, a Briggs will certainly be a easier to find and is more resilient. Depending upon the crankshaft diameter you may even be able to up the horsepower a bit.

Thanks for your reply guys really appreciate it. I have found out it is indeed a tecumseh tvm140 which has recoil start and electric start. I’ve been pulling the engine out today. I’ve got a mtd lawnflite here from 1987 which ive rebuilt etc so going to see if the briggs marries up with the bolt holes on the w6, if so ill grab a briggs without tearing into this one but if not i will tear the engine apart and see what has failed. I’d like to put a 12hp in it but not sure as of yet. Do you reckon the crank will fit from a briggs then? Thanks

The only thing I can think of is that the shaft size may be different depending on engine and (from experience) require a pulley with a larger/smaller centre hole to fit on to the engine. I swapped a Tecumseh engine (cannot remember what machine)) for a much better Briggs and it required a new double pulley as the Tecumseh-sized one wouldn’t fit the Briggs.

I’ll attach the W6 brochure here as PDF for future reference for anyone (and subsequently devalue all W6 brochures being sold in online auctions). The brochure refers to the W6 as the Baby Gazelle.

Thank you for your help, very much appreciated! Only thing left to do is to get that pulley off as it siezed on so just ordered a blow torch as a bit of heat will help. I’ll let you know how it goes when I pull the engine apart.
