<p>I have just bought a BRL manual cylinder grinder and have no information on its use.<br />
Its quite a heavy machine and has a hand operated grinding head traversed along guide rails.<br />
The cylinder sits between centres but there is no way of powering its rotation, I&#8217;m assuming you move the cylinder under the grindstone one blade at a time.</p>

These actions cured the problems and I now have an engine that runs beautifully.<br />

The air inlet system for the pilot jet looks pretty critical and the seat face of the plastic air filter housing is warped so I suspect its letting in excess air. New housing on order.<br />

I&#8217;m not sure what is happening. Starts on choke and runs well but as soon as I drop the throttle lever to the Hare run position it runs poorly, very little difference between that and the Tortoise idle setting.<br />
Maybe just a carb clean is in order.<br />

<p>Biggest issue is date of manufacture,  they are really pedantic about that.</p>
<p>Also if it is an imported machine you will have to get a NOVA notification  regarding VAT. I took the whole fan casing, fan and flywheel off this morning. Cleaned the points and set them to 14 thou.<br />
I used a depth gauge I made to measure from the plug hole to the piston crown, added 5/32 and that came to 20.63mm<br />

I swapped back to the old plug and it runs, bit of popping back through the carb but it recovers and runs ok.<br />

I seem to be having similar problems with my machine.<br />
It will start after 4 or five pulls from cold. It runs for a few minutes then dies and will not run till it cools down.<br />
Been playing with the carb but that doesn&#8217;t seem to make much difference.<br />
How would I get the coil tested?<br />

<p>I contacted the DVSA to check about type approval and they confirmed what I thought, that it does not need type approval. So that&#8217;s a major pain in the neck avoided.</p>
<p>I went through the form V55/5 which deals with registering an old vehicle.</p>

<p>When I opened it up there sat a very sad LX277 ride on tractor mower.</p>

<p>Their technical department were brilliant, replying promptly.</p>
<p>The belts are routed the way I suspected, tensioner pulleys on the inside of the belt.</p>
<p>The sprocket is a left hand thread but will be tighter than a crab with lock jaw. The wheels drive belt was just about wrecked and I think it was routed wrongly before i stripped it. I&#8217;m not even sure it&#8217;s the right belt.<br />

Mine has a midget carb but the 25c has a Junior carb I believe.<br />
The Allen manual explains setting the timing etc so it may help you with your machine.<br />

I&#8217;m struggling with the mower head layshaft sprocket, not on a key, no grub screw, no end bolt to secure it. Started to strip it this morning. Split the cutter head off the drive unit so I can service it separately. It is indeed a heavy lump.<br />

Got it home and when the safety switches were all set it fired up second pull!<br />
Blades turn, drive works, even the handbrake is working.<br />
Got her in the workshop and I will start a service in the morning. 									<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Mine was scrap because of the degree of rusting. I sweated the soft soldered filler neck out and can use that when I fabricate a new one. For now a plastic auxiliary tank for a night heater off Ebay will do. 4.5l capacity for a few quid.<br />
Cutters are razor sharp and very robust, it will cut 1 inch thick hawthorn stems.<br />

I&#8217;ve got a manual off line but I&#8217;m not sure if it&#8217;s right for this model, have to have a look tomorrow.<br />
Just need an engine manual for the GH250 Kubota engine in case it needs major work.<br />

Only issue is wear in the pivot pin for the cutter head, it wont affect operation too much but ideally it needs a new pin and barrel to make it right.<br />

I go to collect it on friday so I will know more then.<br />
Looks in good order but there is always the possibility of something being wrong with it.<br />

<p>I can start fitting the carb and throttle cable. The fuel tank is about shot so I&#8217;m going to use a plastic one to get things running, then make a new metal one as and when.</p>
<p>I stripped out one of the cast iron blade inserts and it&#8217;s not a big job to make new gauge plate blades if required.</p>

									<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Found that SAE 30 classic car engine oil is best for the transmission box, 5 litres for 24 quid and it took a couple of litres. Rest I can use as 2 stroke mixture.<br />
Rebuilt the cutter head and need to adjust the pads to give me proper cutter blade pressure.<br />

									<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Looks like I have a 3/4 model carb from a motor cycle. Not made for the allen scythe. So I will get the proper one for the job.</p>
<p>Today I rebuilt the handles, had to make three new studs as the old ones had been left slack and been bent or worn.</p>
<p>Repaired the clutch lever and reset it all and it works great. </p>

<p>It&#8217;s great to put an age on my machine, I had an inkling it was pretty early. </p>
<p>They went on into the seventies I believe, I wonder what the last production number was.</p>

<p>I&#8217;m not sure of the exact age of mine, it has an aluminium cast cover for the fan housing so I think it&#8217;s quite old, certainly pre-1947 based on my version of the manual.</p>
<p>My cutter bar is dead flat, I&#8217;d have to look at some images to see what you mean about yours being curved.</p>

<p>Looking for suitable transmission oil and I have stripped the cutter bar down to check the finger plates and blades.</p>
<p>Soon be time to rebuild and test.</p>

<p>The oil definitely has the smell and thickness of a gear oil, but the manual says use the same quality of oil as in the engine. It certainly says not to use thick oil.</p>
<p>It looks as though the gearbox will need splash lubrication so a thinner oil would be of benefit. </p>

									<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The gear box internals look great, no rust or wear. Just new oil required after a clean out. There is an oil leak on the rocker shaft but looks like only a felt washer is used so that might be expected. Will investigate further. </p>

But I&#8217;m in a position to have a look inside the gear casing. See if there are any surprises lurking there.<br />
My local motorcycle dealer has tyres that will suit at 39 quid each fitted so I feel a purchase coming on.<br />
