You are in luck I have a gearbox cover undamaged in alloy which is correct for the MG2.
If you make me an offer and postage you are welcome to it. Send me a pm with your full name and address.

A single wire off the brass tab on the outside of the magneto body will do the job connect to a switch or push button near the seat, A runaway crawler is not funny they will climb over anything and drop off steep banking without coughing. I am near Carlisle but may be able to get a cover delivered to you. I will have a look and see what I have.

I may have a spare gearbox cover where are you from?
I think it is great to involve your children so many now have no idea of mechanical things.
The MG2 does not normally have an electric cut out switch near the driver. As they are prone to sticking throttle cables the centrifugal clutch means that the tractor cannot be stopped if the throttle sticks with all the risks that can involve. Having had it happen to me several times can I suggest that you fit a kill switch wired off the magneto to kill the engine in the event of any mishap.

I use 140 grade oil which is thick enough to be applied using a standard grease gun.
The gear levers are notoriously tight a puller and heat are the only way to remove without major damage. Do not lever against the gearbox cover it will crack. How old is your son?

The Ransomes canal tractor which Neil shows was I believe sold by Ransomes into the London canal system/dockyards. It evolved over a number of machines which were trialled in a number of areas but reputedly only one was made with the wheel steering system. A number of records and photos are held at Reading .

Well done Iain it has been a long haul and a lot of work but well worth the effort. Can you turn the float upside down or is it dented both ends?

Patience , persistence and preferably a mate with a strong right arm and the heart of a lion !
I have had similar experience which at the end of the day turned out to be either magneto or condenser related a tell tale plug from Neil is well worth the expense, shows if plug is sparking under compression. I have also found on the MG5 that the choke a nd throttle procedure is quite critical on cold starting, pull plug lead off, full choke turn the engine over a couple of times. Replace plug lead, no more than quarter throttle or less, turn over, if it fires move choke lever to second position. Once it starts do nothing for two minutes unless it is clear engine is over choked in this case lower the choke lever towards the off very slowly keeping the engine running. Do not attempt to slow the engine down or up until you are sure it is warm to hot usually about 5 minutes then start to slow throttle until you can engage drive( it will probably graunch )
    Hope that helps.

Even the smallest horticultural machines have heavy parts which become harder for the mature person to lift safely. I anticipated that this may become a problem with my Ransomes collection and invested in a lifting pallet truck, various very cheap hoists from Lidl an engine crane and various other helpful devices which would enable me to continue with my hobby into old age. The only problem i NOW HAVE IS THAT i HAVE FORGOTTEN WHERE i PUT THEM !

The turf Tracs are great machines I have two 425 and a 420 with loader. I keep meaning to test the road speed with a sat nav to find out if it is fast enough to take on a tractor road run ! I have had my 420 up on the front wheels several times they are so capable that you always tend to push against the limits. really was a good show very well attended with many exhibits of extremely high standard, huge auction.

My neighbour has an MG5 with pto to drive a saw bench , he has fitted a new electric start diesel engine as he was struggling with crank handles due to arthritis he is well pleased with it. Spares both new and used are readily available, Neil Jarrett is very helpful.

I am hoping to attend with three Ransomes wheeled machines on the basis that these will be exhibited inside tracks, being banned from the exhibition floors.

The track drive rollers are intended to run completely dry with no grease as this will retain grit and wear away the spindles, the manual instructs that if they become stuck with mud etc that you tap them with a hammer until free, not sure of the timespan of wear but if you are tracking distances pulling timber it may be significant.
